But on Wednesday evening, family and friends began to remember their loved ones. Nurse candidate Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux reported being shot when she ran into the path of the gang's truck while fleeing gunfire. The 18-year-old visited Louisiana from Mississippi with his cousin and friend Zion Parsons to celebrate the new year before starting a two-week intensive care unit. Parsons, 18, said the trio decided to go into town on a whim and arrived around 2 a.m., according to local news site Nola.com. They were leaving the Voodoo Chicken & Daquiris restaurant in Bourbon on Bienville Street when they heard a "commotion" and a "thump."

Nikrya's mother, Melissa Dedeaux, 40, said her granddaughter told her the three of them started running and Nikrya ran down the street toward the driveway.

When Mr. Parsons returned, he found his friend lying motionless in the road, his head spinning. The station reported that an officer told him to leave. "There were bodies all over the road, bodies everywhere, and everybody was screaming and yelling," Mr. Parsons said.  People were crying on the ground, like there were brains everywhere. It was crazy, the closest thing to a war zone I've ever seen. "I just want to see my baby," Ms. Dedeaux told Nola.com. "He's such a sweet person. She'll give you everything. "As a mother, when my granddaughter and [Parsons] said they covered her with a sheet, I knew it was for my daughter." "She's my favorite," the mother of six added. "She's my child." Nikrya, known to her friends as "Biscuit," recently graduated from high school and was scheduled to start her senior year at Blue Cliff College on Jan. 13. Reggie Hunter, a 37-year-old warehouse manager and father of two who lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, told Nola.com that his sister, Shirell Jackson, went to Bourbon Street on a whim. He and another brother were hit by a truck. Another brother was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
