Country in mourning after mass shooting in Montenegro



 Police say a gunman killed 12 people, including two children, in southern Montenegro.

Police said at least some of Wednesday's deaths occurred after an argument between customers at a restaurant in the Cetinje district.

The government declared three days of national mourning starting on Thursday, while Prime Minister Milojko Spajic said the attack was "sad for our black country".

Police said the attack began at 17:30 (16:30 GMT) when a 45-year-old man, Aleksandar Martinoviä, opened fire at the restaurant. According to Montenegro's police chief, he killed his family, the restaurant owner's two children, aged 10 and 13, and the restaurant owner.

The gunman then shot several people at another location.

Interior Minister Danilo Saranović described the incident as "the result of personal relationships", according to AFP.



According to police, the defendant had been drinking alcohol before the attack began. Four people were seriously injured in the shooting and taken to hospital. Police said the attacker fled and was surrounded by police officers who ordered him to drop his weapon and commit suicide. He died on the way to hospital. The prime minister wrote on social media: "This injustice has caused us all great distress and pain. There are no encouraging words."


Milojko Spajic said the National Security Agency would "forcefully consider" all means to protect civilians, including a complete ban on the possession of weapons.
