December marks the end of another artistic year. Despite all the talk that 2024 will be a weak year due to the post-strike struggle and the production success of 2023, there is little doubt that 2024 will be a weak year in terms of freedom and international value for original studio fare (sometimes worthless). In terms of value, 2024 is a rich year. While “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” haven’t quite made it out of the Papenheimer theater frenzy (Wicked has earned that title on its own, of course), there’s still plenty to look forward to. Think about it as early as 2024, enjoy it, and pay for it.
George Miller’s Fury Osa: The Legend of Mad Max isn’t as exciting as Fury Road (although IndieWire liked it), but it’s still one of the most popular. The best films and critics are still praising it. Intimate trans stories like “I Saw TV Flash” and “The Clown” captured the attention of audiences (and the year’s best-known names) and demonstrated the desire for many stories to tell truth and reality. Horror IPs like Smile 2 and First Sign are better than they have any right to be.
Meanwhile, thanks to Netflix, documentaries like “Girls” and “Will & Harper” are also leading the way. “Thelma & Louise” is bringing babies and the elderly back to the theater, while 95-year-old actress June Squibb is delighting viewers with her first analytical role. “Documentary” proves that arthouse horror has a place in multiplexes. “Juror 2” outperforms Warner Bros.’ case. Discovery Channel Sure, “Challenger” makes tennis more likable, but that’s always been the case.
It’s nearly impossible for any moviegoer or even film buff to keep track of more movies coming out in 2024, but IndieWire has you covered for your home-viewing needs.
