What we're observing: One week remains

What we're observing The Senate will start hearings this week for some of the president-elect's most significant nominations, and Donald Trump's return to the White House is officially just one week away. Meredith Lee Hill reported this morning that Trump discussed with a group of House Republicans Sunday night linking wildfire assistance to an increase in the debt ceiling. Though nothing is set in stone, Los Angeles County authorities said Sunday they invited Trump to visit the areas devastated by current wildfires and talk about government support.

Sen. John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming, claims that Trump would release "a blizzard of executive orders on the economy, as well as on the border" on the first day of the new administration, causing "shock and awe." Those who committed acts of violence on January 6 "obviously" should not be pardoned, according to vice president-elect JD Vance.  Rehearsals for Inauguration Day were held on Sunday.

What is Trump doing? Trump has been courting several House Republicans at his Mar-a-Lago club, including a sumptuous dinner for members of the House Freedom Caucus on Friday, whose votes he will need to approve important items on his agenda. (Elon Musk, a billionaire Trump supporter, also stopped by.)

Why are the nominees acting this way? The first Cabinet nominee to have an official hearing is Doug Collins, Trump's option to head the Department of Veterans Affairs. He will be followed by the beleaguered Defense Secretary pick, Pete Hegseth, who will testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. At 10 a.m., Doug Burgum, the nominee for interior, will testify before the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Just so you know, these are Trump's most recent government choices.  Trump appointed several deputies over the weekend, including Paul R. Lawrence as deputy secretary of Veterans Affairs, David Fotouhi as deputy administrator of the EPA, Katharine MacGregor as the next deputy secretary of the Interior, Steven Gill Bradbury as deputy secretary of Transportation, Bill Briggs as deputy administrator of the Small Business Administration, and James P. Danly as deputy See More...
