The second-ever cabinet secretary to advance on a tiebreaker vote is Hegseth.

 



Another cabinet secretary in the Trump administration barely made it through her confirmation process nearly eight years ago, and she only advanced after a tiebreaker vote by the vice president.


That nominee was Betsy DeVos, the confirmed head of the Department of school and a wealthy Republican donor with virtually little public school experience.




Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, voted against Mr. Trump's choice for the position on February 7, 2017. But in the end, Ms. Devos was confirmed by a vote of 51 to 50, without a third Republican joining them.

Vice President Mike Pence, in this instance, was called to the Capitol for the first time to break a tie on a cabinet confirmation.
Vice President JD Vance's decisive vote on Friday guaranteed that Pete Hegseth would be the new defense secretary, making him the second person confirmed to a cabinet secretary position. Ms. Collins and Ms. Murkowski also voted against him, as did Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell.
